Chartwell Retreat

We booked at the last minute for a couple of days with the family. Room 3 was up in the loft, the beds were comfortable, and the apartment was reasonably clean. It worked well for two or three nights, and I’d return. I’ve been coming to Whitby my whole life.

We stayed one night in room 2 during the summer holidays, me with my children, aged 13 and 16. Whitby was very busy when we arrived around 4 pm. Once settled, the location was great, but parking was difficult, so expect about a ten-minute walk to the accommodation. The stairs to the rooms are fairly steep, which isn’t ideal for anyone with a disability, and the room was spacious enough for the three of us. The bathroom handle didn’t work, so you couldn’t open the door from inside. Another reviewer had already mentioned this in March. If it shut while you were alone, you’d have to smash it open. Paint was peeling by the window, the Wi-Fi kept dropping, the tiny fridge didn’t work, and the carpets need a deep clean. I’d guess they were new about two or three years ago. The beds were poor quality and groaned and squealed whenever you moved. At £165, it felt a bit expensive for what you get. Breakfast included might have taken the edge off, but Whitby seems able to charge that much in peak season. Whitby is now ticked off.

We enjoyed our stay a lot. It’s a lovely place in a great location, and everything else was perfect. The only issue was the broken bathroom door handle in room 2. It kept falling off on the inside, and if I’d been staying alone, I wouldn’t have been able to get out.

The room itself was basic but clean. Before we arrived, we were sent a key-box code that didn’t work, so my husband went into The Blitz cafe and got the keys there. Then we found out breakfast wouldn’t be available the next day because the cafe was closed. We’d booked on a BnB basis, so that was a disappointing start.
