The bed was extremely soft, springy and bouncy, and the floorboards squeaked terribly. Sound insulation was poor too, a corridor door opening sounded just like our room door. There was only one chair and nowhere to put things except the windowsill. Multiple light bulbs didn't work, the bathroom door wouldn't latch, and there was no toilet roll holder. The bathroom bin was very rusty. It wasn't possible to get to both sides of the bed. I wouldn't recommend this hotel or stay again.

The seafront spot and the value were both hard to beat, and breakfast was a fantastic buffet with a full English, cereal, juice, toast and jams. I’d read mixed reviews, so the friendly, helpful staff were a very pleasant surprise. There’s parking right outside, though spaces are limited. Renovation work was going on outside but didn’t bother my stay. The heating failed in my first room, but reception moved me quickly and the next room was fine.

The bedrooms were small, but comfortable, and everyone on staff was friendly and helpful, especially at reception. It’s right on the seafront. I’d stay at the Royal Hotel again when I’m back in Whitley Bay.

My first room wasn’t ideal for staying 10 nights, so I was offered another one. It was bright and cosy, and the extra flight of stairs was worth it. The renovation work didn’t affect me at all. I enjoyed the friendly staff, good location and excellent breakfast, and found it very good value. I’d definitely come back.

Parking was the main hassle: there are only about a dozen spaces, with no registration system, so finding one nearby can be tricky. The old building has a lot of character, though there’s no lift, so pack light for the stairs. My room was clean, well kept and cosy after a day on the coast. Breakfast was a highlight, with beans, scrambled eggs, fried tomatoes, mushrooms, hashbrowns, English bacon and sausage, plus cereals, orange juice, milk, tea, coffee and toast. The staff were friendly, attentive and keen to help, which gave the stay a warm, personal feel. I’d happily return.
