The Plough Itchen Abbas

We parked there so we could go walking before lunch, and the staff let us. They also didn’t simply add a service charge. We were very happy to pay it for the warm welcome and delicious meal. We had Saturday lunch at The Plough. It may not look like much from outside, but the food and service were exceptional. The classic pub dishes sit alongside an imaginative menu of local flavours, which we really enjoyed. Everything coming out looked good, and the terrace was a nice place to eat. The inside looked inviting too.

Alex greeted us and showed us to a beautiful room with a private balcony. We’d just arrived from Australia, and this tranquil setting made a memorable first night in England. Dinner with local beer was magnificent, we slept well, and breakfast the next morning was scrumptious. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Well done to the team, and thank you so much.

We used the Plough for two nights as a base for visiting Winchester. It’s a stylish, homely pub, and though the rooms are small, they’re very clean and nicely presented. We ate there both evenings and the food was just perfect. Breakfast offered cereal, fruit and/or Greek yoghurt, along with a choice of hot food. We didn’t manage a walk nearby, but the Park & Ride is only a short drive away and we used it to get into the city. I’d happily recommend the pub for a stay or dinner.

The food was the best we’ve had in a very long time. The sea bass and fish & chips are worth recommending, though everything looked imaginative and was cooked perfectly. We’ll definitely go back. We wanted somewhere quiet outside town for our Winchester visit, and this gorgeous little place was just right. The staff were really lovely, the rooms clean and comfortable, and it’s perfectly located about 10 minutes from the city.
