The restaurant was very clean, and the staff there were attentive. Breakfast was average, though, and the evening menu was limited. Our stay was spoiled by some noisy Eastern European people who work for the council and stay at the hotel during the week. We visited during the hottest week of summer, but could only open one window. I shared a twin room with my disabled mother, and despite having booked parking, there was no space, so we had to park across a rather wide, busy road. There was just one small sachet of milk in the room, the extra pillow we asked for never arrived, and our wake-up call didn’t come.

The room was okay, and being able to come and go whenever we liked was handy. There were a few problems, though: no air conditioning, a broken hot tap in the bath, a temperamental shower, and a broken window handle. There was also an iron-shaped burn mark in the carpet.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, and it was nice to be able to bring the dogs into the bar while we ate. At £125 a night, I do think breakfast should have been included.

The beds were comfortable and the rooms, though a bit dated, were clean. Breakfast felt expensive for me since the only choices were buffet or full English, and I just wanted tea and toast. At checkout I waited about ten minutes at reception because the staff were busy in the bar and restaurant. They could use more staff.

The rooms are good value, and everyone on staff was friendly. I didn't eat there, though the menu looked appealing. You do hear the plumbing make some noise now and then, but I suppose that's to be expected in an old building.
