The location is great and central, and the room was comfortable enough. Parking was poor: it wasn't clear that valet parking had to be booked, or that the lack of a booking option on the website meant it was full. Breakfast catered well for gluten-free, but the evening menu was less inspiring. There are lots of good restaurants within walking distance, though.

The location is a real highlight, right across from a lovely Castle. We had tea at the café with the Castle just outside the window, and the centre and tourist attractions are very close. Getting here from the station was easy, and the area is nice to walk around. Our room looked and smelled clean when we arrived, with clean sheets, mirror and toilet seat. I loved the breakfast too, with a good mix of hot and continental food, nice tea and helpful staff. We ordered it to the room one day by choosing from the menu and hanging our choices outside. The room service was great in general, from toiletry refills to bringing dinner inside. A couple of details could be better. We wanted breakfast in our room so we could sleep longer, but staff called at 9 am to check whether we still wanted it, which was annoying. Another morning the table we were shown wasn't properly set, so we had to collect cutlery and condiments from other tables. At 11, very late for dinner, the only room service option was a margarita pizza. That's understandable at that hour, but since 24/7 room service is advertised, they might consider more late-night choices. £10 for two small bottles of Coke also seems unjustifiable. The toilet had hand cream and conditioner, thoughtful little touches that suggest they care about quality. I did wonder whether a Hilton could provide a room fridge. The toilet roll holder was poorly designed too, and the roll kept falling off. I'm a big germaphobe, so could someone from Hilton confirm whether the TV remote, doorknob, phone, hangers, light switch, curtains, window handles, chairs and bed frame are cleaned each time? And what about the walls, especially in the bathroom, the showerhead and the bath handles? Thank you. The stay was lovely overall, with nice rooms, very kind staff and a great location. Worth paying a little extra.

Hilton York, 1 Tower Street You can step around the side of the hotel straight into the city centre. JORVIK Viking Centre is about 100 metres away, Fairfax House roughly 50 metres, and Clifford’s Tower is right by the hotel. Bars, restaurants and shops are all around, too. The location is perfect for a York visit, and our room looked out over Clifford’s Tower. The room was spotless and well equipped, and the hotel has a well-kept modern-classic feel. Breakfast was a highlight, with a large buffet and a chef cooking eggs to order. The bar is comfortable and modern. Service was friendly and helpful, and what we needed was sorted without fuss, although it could have been a little sharper and more responsive at times. There's no self-parking at the hotel. On-site valet is the easiest and best-value choice, since the nearby Castle car park is expensive. We visit York a few times each year and would happily stay here again for the central spot, comfortable room and good amenities.

The suite was clean, lovely and had all the amenities we needed, in a perfect location. Restaurant staff were helpful and lovely, though the food could definitely be better. The room walls are so thin you can hear everything. Unfortunately, expect to lose sleep until the sun's up and the partying stops.

My husband booked this for my birthday because we were going to see Jodie Comer in Prima Facie. The play was brilliant, but the stay and general service fell short. We had a balcony room with a great view of the Tower, but the person or people above us started moving furniture in the middle of the night. The bed was about as comfortable as a bed of nails. Also, don't ask for a drink after 11pm unless you're ordering a bottle. Nobody told us that when we put £100 credit on the bar at check-in. I was really looking forward to the trip, so it was sad that it didn't feel as special as I'd hoped.
