The room was tired but clean. There was some dirt built up around the shower screen, though everywhere else was spotless. The beds were reasonably comfortable, but they were single beds. I booked a twin by mistake instead of a double, and although my wife found two double rooms available online, the landlord wouldn’t change ours because we’d already paid. We were left with paying again or sleeping in singles. When we appealed to him, he said it was a head office matter and nothing could be done. Check-in didn’t feel particularly welcoming from either staff or patrons, though that’s what you’d expect from Sam Smiths. The heating didn’t work at first. The landlord said he’d fixed it, but it was still off when we came back a few hours later. We mentioned it again, and he said he’d sort it. That time he did, and the room warmed up. We didn’t eat or drink at the bars because of the welcome we got. Breakfast was a basic B&B fry-up. It was pretty cheap for a hotel near the city centre, but the standard would have to improve a lot before we came back.
