Uma Ray Suites

The location was good, but my room felt extremely cramped, even as a solo traveler. I’m not sure how a couple would manage in it. It could have been cleaner too. It wasn’t awful, just not very good, and there are better choices on the island.

The evening was stressful and upsetting, when we had expected a relaxing spa visit. We called ahead and were told the massage package included the pool, sauna, and steam room. We also said we’d arrive at 7:00 PM, then called again to say we’d be a little late. The manager kept bringing up our lateness and using it to deflect from the poor service. There was no sauna or steam room when we got there, just a pool with a few cold jets that had been advertised as a “jacuzzi.” It also smelled strongly and unpleasantly. We were charged extra for pool service, even though a staff member had told us it came with the massage package. When we tried to explain our concerns, the manager ignored us while we were speaking. He was dismissive and unprofessional, and there was an undercurrent of bias that felt especially uncomfortable as women and people of color. I would absolutely not recommend this place, especially for women or people of color.

The Wi-Fi never reached our room, so working or watching Netflix there wasn’t possible. The hotel has separate networks scattered around instead of a mesh network, and that seems like something they could fix. We were in the Junior Suite, a bottom floor room with its own entrance away from the main hotel. Its only window was a sliding screen door onto Main Street, which made it feel like a dungeon. That was particularly disappointing since it was the hotel’s most expensive room. The other rooms seemed to have more natural light and better layouts.

We’re grateful to Fanourios and the team at Uma Ray Suites. Late at night, when we had to leave our other accommodation, Fanourios went out of his way to help and arranged a transfer at short notice. The team made us feel completely comfortable. We couldn’t have asked for a better stay, and will definitely return.
