After days out exploring Cobán, Semuc Champey, and Biotopo del Quetzal, we’d come back to Jaime and his family and feel warmly welcomed. We stayed a week, and they shared pepián, b’oj, rellenitos de plátano, and plenty of conversation with us. There’s a tienda and tortillería right on the property, too. The place and neighborhood feel very authentic. It may not suit everyone, but for my partner and me it was a special kind of stay, and just what I look for when traveling. I’d recommend it if you want somewhere genuine and away from the usual route.

It felt like we were staying in everyday Guatemala, away from the more touristy spots, and taking a bus from just outside made getting to the city center easy. Jaime and his family were so helpful and welcoming. The hostel has a lovely rustic feel and a good kitchen. We had a great stay and would definitely recommend visiting.

If money's really tight, Coraizone hostal is very cheap, and the staff couldn't have been friendlier. The place is basic, though, and two of us ended up sleeping in the car. We found spiders and lots of other insects in the room, and the metal beds had mattresses only about 2-4 cm thick, so they were painfully hard. Breakfast and dinner were really bad, too. The toilets were rough. Staff were still very helpful and nice.

I loved the conversations with the host, and people nearby were always ready to point me in the right direction. The area felt really safe. Local buses make it handy for the biotopo del Quetzal, orquigonia, a coffee tour, and Cobán city. It’s a good way to get off the gringo trail and see real Guatamala. The facilities are basic, but I thought the experience was worth it, especially since it costs much less than other hostels in Guatamala. Breakfast at the hostel is Q15 and dinner Q20.

The kitchen is there for guests to use, though cooking is over a wood fire, and the family gave us a hand with it. They also shared tips and useful information about traditions, local food, and getting onward. There’s a shop, a tortilleria, the hostel, and a furniture workshop, all run by the family, and we had some really good chats with them. If you're doing the coffee tour, as we did, you can walk there from here. From Cobán centre, take a bus in the direction of Esperanza. It’s a simple place with great WiFi outside the center, and it gives you more of the real Guatemala. Just don’t expect a cozy bed or a nice bathroom.
