The market just outside Hotel Zaculeu was a highlight for us. It stretches over 4-5 city blocks and is full of fresh vegetables, meat, clothes, shoes, and all kinds of goods. Walking around for an afternoon, watching and listening to residents selling along the sidewalks, was crowded but lively. The ancient Maya site of "Zaculeu" is about 3 miles out of town, beautiful among the mountains and amazing to see. We stayed five days in this old hotel in the heart of the city, with mountain views from the windows and the bustle all around. It has a modest dining room with very good food, and the rooms are modest but clean. Hot water was adequate, though slow to arrive in some rooms. Rates and food were very reasonable, and parking is inside the hotel grounds, a safe spot in a vibrant old city. The owners are physicians with a small medical clinic on the grounds. They live there with their family and are very nice people doing good work for the community. Whatever you need, they’re eager to help, and English-speaking staff are available. It isn’t a typical "American Style" hotel, but it gives you a feel for this old city.

They lock up at night and turn the lights off. I had planned to meet someone at 6am, but didn’t want to leave because I wouldn’t have been able to get back in. I’m sure that’s typical here. The place seemed clean and secure, though the bed and pillows weren’t very comfortable. I’m picky about beds.

I spent eight days here and enjoyed every day. The hotel is very clean, close to the center of town, and the staff were kind and friendly. The restaurant also served very good food.

The room was decent, and the shower had warm water. But it faced the town centre and was extremely noisy. I missed breakfast, which ran from 6 to 8, and smog came in through the window, so I had to ducktape it shut.

The location is handy for the plaza and buses, with no more than 4 blocks to the ruins or the way toward Coban or Total Santo. There’s a nice garden, but the rooms are dark and the shower didn’t drain well. Check-in was a little disorganized. I didn’t try the restaurant, and it didn’t seem too busy.
