The Teppanyaki was the standout for me. I’ve eaten at Teppanyaki restaurants in several countries, and this one can hold its own. The serene murals and intimate lighting create a nice setting for the chefs’ show, with fast chopping, onion volcanoes and some impressive utensil juggling. The seafood was fresh, the local meats were up to the standard of high-end steakhouses abroad, and the local vegetables made a real difference to the fried rice. I wouldn’t skip the lobster or rice. The hotel works as a hub too, with a casino, spa and pool that all seemed top-tier. There’s ample parking and professional service, and it’s a handy landmark for finding your way around Georgetown. I’m interested in high-end decor, so I was surprised by how much care had gone into the place. The lobby feels grand but welcoming, with European elegance alongside local warmth. There’s a large tribute to Klimt’s The Kiss and grand chandeliers that give the space unusual scale for the region.

The location is amazing, and you can get wherever you need to go. The bathrooms, though, need an overhaul urgently. Privacy curtains could be an easy fix, since the glass showers let people outside see your silhouette. Keep that in mind if you’re bringing children. It feels like this place must once have been a great destination, but now it seems to be barely holding on.

It feels more like somewhere to sleep than a place to enjoy a stay, and seems suited to workers. The facilities are in bad shape. The elevator stops suddenly when the power goes out, and the rooms aren’t cleaned regularly. There’s no hot water, the food and atmosphere are both subpar, and you can’t get a cold beer at the bar, which is run by young staff. The staff seem undertrained and are very slow to respond.

Front desk staff were consistently courteous and sorted out problems effectively. The room itself was spotless, tidy and comfortable, though the terrace could have been looked after better. Tea bags weren’t topped up automatically, so I suspect I’d have had to ask. Breakfast had a variety of choices, but leaned heavily on local food. I’d have liked more familiar international options. The people at the restaurant and taxi company were much less attentive and didn’t take much initiative when issues came up. The restaurant has fixed hours and is fairly pricey, so a vending machine or small kiosk for snacks and drinks at any hour would be useful. I’d recommend the hotel for cleanliness and the excellent front desk service. Better terrace upkeep, a more proactive restaurant and taxi team, and basic refreshments available around the clock would improve the stay.

Water started pouring through the ceiling into the middle of my room on my last day. My husband and I had to catch it in an ice bucket. That was the final straw. I’ll never spend money at this hotel again, and strongly recommend booking at the Marriott instead. I’m requesting a refund for this unacceptable experience. This all began with my friend Kasmin’s wedding in Guyana. She recommended Ramada Hotel, so about 10 of us booked rooms. Some of the guest rooms were decent, but Kasmin, the bride who brought all that business, got the worst room imaginable. It was on another floor, the shower still had blackout strips, the bathroom door was broken, and there was a roach in the room. When she raised the problems, the front desk was rude and unhelpful. They said she had to pay again because she’d booked through Expedia with a Visa card, even though the reservation had been made and paid for in March. Other people in our group ran into the same issue. The manager came in the next day, was shocked when she heard how Kasmin had been treated, and offered her a free upgrade. By then, Kasmin was already planning to check out, so it was too late. The bar staff also refused to serve our group even though we were standing right in front of them ready to buy drinks. The only staff who treated us with respect weren’t locals.
