The hotel’s best feature is its convenient location as a base for exploring HK island. We booked it for the CNY fireworks because the lounge overlooks the harbor, but they rented the lounge out for a private function on the exact date of the big fireworks. If you’re hoping for a special occasion view, don’t count on it. They moved club members away from the harbor-view floor, then served cheap, unappetizing chili con carne in the lounge on the second day of CNY. Who was managing that? At least serve decent Chinese food on Chinese New Year. The hotel itself is very old. The room decor feels dated, and it seems they’ve only done the minimum refurbishing needed to keep its five-star ranking. The lifts are woeful and feel like an old design. We tried Gold Leaf for a quick dinner, and the food was terrible. The chicken tasted stale, like frozen burnt chicken, and the stir-fried shrimp seemed to be deep-frozen cocktail shrimp. If you charge high prices, use fresh ingredients. I absolutely wouldn’t recommend the hotel.

We had great service and were upgraded to an executive floor suite with a peak view. Harbor-view rooms are quite scarce because of the commercial buildings in front. The breakfast buffet used to be better, so I hope they improve it by our next visit.

The staff are the best part of the Conrad Hong Kong. When you raise an issue, they handle it quickly, efficiently, and politely. We were there over New Year, staying on the 60th floor with lounge access, but the lounge was cramped and the food was poor compared with Shangri La. It was almost embarrassing beside the Shangri La hotels just across the border in Shenzhen. That’s the hotel’s biggest problem: compared with what’s available in Shenzhen, everything feels a bit more tired, small, and lacking. Our room was in slightly poor condition, with stained walls and ceilings that needed work. The lifts are awful and seem to reflect a dated design. I also dislike hotels marking up minibar drinks. I paid over $4000 a night, so there’s no need to mark up a can of Coke by 800%. For the price, the hotel itself is disappointing, and it’s lucky to have such awesome staff.

For my birthday, my daughter suggested staying at the Conrad. I’ve been to Hong Kong countless times since I was a little girl in 1966, but had never stayed there before. We arrived on Lunar New Year’s Day, and the entrance and lobby decorations were beautiful. From our room on the 54th floor, the view was breathtaking, especially at night. The Western and Chinese breakfast buffet was satisfying. After our day trip to Macau, the Conrad surprised me with a delicious chocolate birthday cake during turndown service. The staff and housekeeping did a great job. I’d absolutely stay at the Conrad again.

The service was the best I’ve ever had at a hotel, and the atmosphere, food, and drinks were all top notch. The location couldn’t have been better, attached to the mall at Admiralty for great shopping with direct access to the train station. Choosing the Conrad for our Hong Kong trip was the best decision we made.
