Australian Guest House

The room and bathroom were both tiny and made it hard to move around comfortably. The double bed felt like a single, and there were only two pillows and one thick blanket. They tidied the room and changed towels daily. The keycard worked, though sometimes it took a while. It smelled like amoy kulog. There was air conditioning but no remote, plus a TV, safe, and table. No chair or cabinets. They provided towels, shampoo, and soap, but no toothbrush or toothpaste. At least the shower had hot water. The location is convenient for Victoria harbour and the MTR, with lots of places to eat and shop for groceries nearby. Since it's in Chungking mansion, expect long elevator queues and foreigners offering guesthouses in the lobby. The guesthouse was supposed to be in Block D on the 16th floor, but they moved us to another one in Block C on the 9th floor.

We booked two family-size rooms at the Australian Guest House for three nights, and both were in terrible condition. One of my brother's rooms had a leak that may have come from a toilet upstairs, and one of the beds had bed bugs. The website photos were outdated and misleading. When we arrived at reception, we saw rats and cockroaches running around the staircases and exits. The entrance is inside a public market, with local people constantly coming in and out, and the elevator was awful. We often waited ten minutes because residents used it too, not just guests. I understand that's common in older Hong Kong buildings, but guests should be told beforehand. I tried speaking with the owner, but he was rude and unprofessional. He offered no explanation or help and just told us to complain to Agoda. We had planned a good vacation, so I didn't want to leave a bad review, but the stay was so awful that we left after one night and booked another hotel.

We were nervous about cleanliness, but everything turned out fine. The room was small, which makes sense for the price in the heart of Hong Kong. The staff were very friendly, and the location was great.

I didn't get the room I booked. Agoda listed it as 11 square meters, but the actual room was smaller, and the listing said there would be a window when there wasn't one. I hope I can get a refund.
