Alice Hostel

We wouldn’t recommend staying here. Ants had infested my room, and the showers went from hot to completely cold after about 15 seconds. The owner was asleep when we arrived, so we’d never have got in if other guests hadn’t been entering. When he was around, though, he was reasonably friendly.

We stayed three nights with my cousin and mother, and I’d happily come back when I’m in Budapest. It’s a small, homey guesthouse, not a big impersonal one, and the owner was extremely kind and seemed to know what we needed. The location is nice too, about a four-minute walk from Budapest-Keleti Railway Station. There’s free Wi-Fi, laundry, a decent shower, and free breakfast, though the amount isn’t much. The place is relaxing and good for a smaller group of guests. A couple of things to know: not many places nearby are open at night, and the street outside isn’t very clean. The hostel sign is small and only by the main gate, so it can take a while to spot.

For the price, it’s pretty good value. The hostel is clean, the hosts are nice, and there’s a kitchen to use plus a light breakfast. Wi-Fi is free and fast. Rooms are basic, with regular bunk beds and linen, but no towels or lockable lockers. Public transport is close by, which makes the location convenient. The nearby building was a hospital, I think, and there was a lot of night noise. With no air conditioning, we had to keep the windows open. If you’re visiting in summer, bring earplugs.

For the price, the quality feels at least a star above the category. Thank you for doing such a proper, excellent job!
