Old Lake Golf Hotel

The menu is chef-designed and gourmet, with a treat at every stage from appetizers through dessert. The restaurant and customer service are five star, and the owner goes out of her way to welcome everyone staying there. It’s a peaceful, beautiful setting and a real haven for athletes looking for a wonderful golfing experience in an authentic Hungarian landscape.

There was dried grass on the fairways and greens, and really there were hardly any fairways to speak of. I paid nearly 100 euros for the green fee and regretted it straight away. In those conditions, I wouldn’t have paid even 20 euros to play. Now I see why the course was empty. It feels like a trap for golfers, and under the current conditions I can’t recommend playing there at any price. I tried speaking with the staff in English, German, and Italian, but they didn’t speak those languages, at least as far as I could tell. They spoke Hungarian. P.S. If you sell damaged goods, it seems fair to discount them, and the same should apply to the green fee. Building a name and good customer relationships matters, and this course and its owners don’t seem to be doing that. Maybe that’s why golf is still trying to find its way in Hungary.

There are lovely rooms, a beautiful garden and golf course, plus a romantic spa and wellness area. The staff were extremely kind and helpful, and the food was amazing. We got the “Dunamente” card free with our room, with fantastic discounts, though you need to reserve at least 2 nights. The air conditioning didn’t work well, and the bathroom had a small issue.

The golf course was wonderful and the food really tasty, so those earn a star each from me. The stay itself was a big letdown. The room was ugly, with old, dirty walls, carpet, and bathroom. The bedside table was disgusting and nearly falling apart. I wouldn’t recommend staying here.
