Sun Island Hotel & Spa Legian

The spa was my favorite part, with professional therapists and a peaceful setting. I left feeling refreshed. We also enjoyed the BBQ dinner one evening: the food was fresh and tasty, the singer had a beautiful voice, and the atmosphere was lovely. Sun Island Bali isn't brand new, but it's well cared for, cozy and calm. Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable, and I slept really well. There was a sweet surprise on the bed when we arrived, a lovely touch. Cafes, shops and the beach are nearby, so it's easy to get around Legian. Thanks to the team for the warm hospitality. I'd happily return.

I raised my rating from 2 to 3 stars because management resolved the issue. Our rooms were dated but decent for the price, the staff were polite and attentive, and the location was good. I wouldn't say booking here is a bad choice. After a long day touring Mt. Batur and Water Palace and checking out of our B&B in Ubud, we arrived tired and had to head out again in half an hour. The toilet washer wasn't working. We asked the front desk to check it in case I didn't know how it worked, and maintenance spent about half an hour trying to fix it. It worked once or twice, but not reliably. The worker seemed to be following instructions and did try to clean up, though some dirty shoe prints remained on the bathroom floor. I suggested another room, but the front desk said they'd send maintenance. That might have been fine in peak season with no rooms free, or if it had broken during our stay and we had caused it. We hadn't even unpacked yet, and having someone tinker with the room was the last thing we needed before our only rest break before going downtown that night. While we were out, the maintenance guy returned and finally got it working, but it leaked onto the floor whenever it was used. We moved to another room the next day. Guests are often weary travellers when they first check in, and managers should keep that in mind when trying to give them a good experience.

Staff were great, helpful and accommodating, and housekeeping kept our room clean every day. The location was good, and the wifi was decent. Our first room had a strange smell and small bugs, but changing rooms the same day was no problem, and we had no issues in the second room. It was much noisier there, though, with guests coming and going and traffic, since it was on the bottom floor. The cable TV worked sometimes and sometimes didn't. There was no reception when it rained, and the TVs aren't smart, so no Netflix. The breakfast buffet was okay, but the food quality wasn't great and seemed reheated. Most of it wasn't covered, so flies got on it, and I stuck to the basics each day. There are 2 pools. The Balcony pool was great, but I didn't use the rooftop pool. It was very outdated and shallow, maybe good for toddlers, and the area felt kind of abandoned with everything packed up every day. Laundry was expensive at the hotel. I didn't use the service, and recommend bringing cash for local laundry places since most businesses don't accept cards.

Staying here was one of my best experiences in Bali. I was very happy and will visit again in the summer. I liked some of the breakfast dishes, and the room attendant was friendly. I got to know RYO, who was very friendly and liked talking with me.
