The staff are friendly and seem like sweet people, but I don't think they understand the health risks of mold or how to run the place. My room reeked of it, and both pillows had black mold. At the front desk, they said it happens and that it's hard to get the bedding fully dry. I had to buy a pillow myself, and they didn't reimburse me. It sucks, but I won't come back.

The low price helps, and I understand that simple accommodation involves some tradeoffs. Still, this was noticeably rougher than other homestays I've visited at similar prices. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the location was pleasant and quiet, not too far from Ubud's main attractions. Our room badly needed maintenance: peeling paint and mold on the walls and fittings, a leaking toilet, moisture-damaged doors that wouldn't shut properly, dim lighting, worn-out pillows and mattress, plus various smaller issues. The garden was quite overgrown too. It was an okay stay overall, but I don't expect luxury and this still fell short.

I spent a month here and loved every day. The location is just right, near everything you need but still quiet. Everyone was so friendly and happy to help with questions. You can also rent a bike right at the property for a really good price, which is handy. I'd definitely recommend Astawa house!

We stayed two days and the place was really, really clean and tidy. The rooms were nice, and even when we forgot to ask, they made sure to clean them. The receptionist was welcoming, a genuinely good and helpful man. The owner, a well-known medicine practitioner, was kind and humble too. A lovely stay with lovely people, highly recommend it.

We spent a week in the private bungalow. It was quiet and private, with a comfortable bed, mosquito net, cold AC, hot water, and an electric kettle with coffee replaced daily. The room was cleaned every day, the balcony was a lovely place to spend an afternoon, and the front desk staff were polite and friendly. The bathroom was pretty dirty, and its door had been replaced with a privacy curtain while they wait to repair it. There are also geckos living at the top of the roof, which felt unsanitary since they pee and poo on top of the mosquito net. The place has deteriorated after COVID and the drop in tourism, though the owners have done what they can to keep it going. For the price, it's decent for a short stay, and I'd recommend 2-3 nights at most.
