The owner is very nice, and the room is big and pretty standard. Having our own water dispenser in the room was my favorite part, since we could get hot water whenever we wanted. But the toilet wasn’t clean at all, and the toilet bowl was filthy 😔. My husband extended our stay by one more night. Now I’m wondering whether I should move to another room and hope for a cleaner toilet.

We were digital nomads and worked from the room, especially on hot, muggy days when the AC was welcome. It’s not a five-star hotel, but the value is amazing, especially if you’re out during the day. Our second-floor unit had a balcony that was great for relaxing, and the AC was fantastic, the bed comfy and the shower always hot. We ended up staying five months at Mekenyem House after deciding to extend our original one-month trip. We’d already been in Ubud, so I asked Yudha about availability because we liked the quieter Nyuh Kuning neighborhood. The room he showed me was ideal, with plenty of space, a refrigerator, an electric kettle and a gas burner for cooking if we wanted. We loved the laid-back area and Blend Cafe right next door, where we found the best tasting food art smoothie bowls in Ubud. It became our living room and a place to work. We also regularly went to nearby restaurants and cafes, including Black Sheep, Current, Mother's, Bali Bohemia, Cafe Wayan, and Warung Be Pasih for great sushi. It’s about a 15-minute walk from Mekenyem through the Monkey Forest scooter/walking path to the south side of busy Ubud. Yoga Barn is a 20-minute walk and the Palace about 35 minutes. We walked for exercise, but Gojek is easy to find, and there are several scooter rentals next to Mekenyem. Yudha and his father took great care of us. They checked daily if we needed anything, like TP, room cleaning or more water, and responded quickly when we messaged on WhatsApp. For a quieter neighborhood with less traffic and fewer tourists, Nyuh Kuning and Mekenyem House have a lot to offer.

The rooms were new, clean, spacious and affordable, and the service was great. I felt safe and comfortable there. The location is convenient, though walking into Ubud centre means taking a small path past the Monkey Forest, which felt kind of scary. There are plenty of transport options, though.

I spent two months at Mekenyem House and can’t say enough about how great the stay was. Mekenyem and his family were amazing hosts, and the property had a beautiful entrance, free scooter parking, and extremely clean, lovely rooms. There was even a beautiful, playful puppy living there. Mekenyem arranged all the Bali tours for me and my friends at fair prices, and he, his wife and the rest of the family always went out of their way to help. Do yourself a favor and stay here. Make use of Mekenyem for you and your services too! You won’t be disappointed.

Mekenyem House is brand new, and its rooms are spacious for a guest house, around 28sqm. The facilities include WiFi, which seemed fast, AC, hot water, a local-channel TV, minibar, and coffee and tea maker. The extra bed is actually a proper single bed, great for a small family such as 2A+1C or 3A. I think it’s a family business, and the whole family is involved. They’re all really friendly and helpful. Payment is cash only since they don’t have a card machine. I felt the price was worth it for the experience. It’s a very recommended place to stay if you’re planning to enjoy Ubud. The Monkey Forest is close, and there are lots of different restaurants nearby. For delicious local-style seafood at local prices, try Warung Be Pasih, just a five-minute walk away. There’s also a small store right in front of the guest house for water, soft drinks and snacks. If you arrive by car, I suggest renting a motorbike.
