Tegal Sari-Ubud

The rooftop pool was a real highlight: we had the view almost to ourselves on a Thursday afternoon, and it felt like we'd hired the place for an hour and a half. There's also a ground-floor pool, plus a gym that I found a bit underwhelming. The rooftop closes at 6 p.m. and the lower pool at 8 p.m. I was happy with my second stay in Ubud and would come back to Tegal Sari with my parents if we return to Bali. I wish I'd stayed several nights, since the hotel is near Monkey Forest and makes getting into central Ubud easy. Our room was bigger than I'd expected, with a roomy bathroom. The toilet isn't separate. The bathtub was clean, though we didn't use it, and the shower takes a replaceable filter. I fitted one I'd brought from Korea. Overall it seemed clean, apart from a few little ants that didn't bother me. The staff were lovely throughout. From check-in to the welcome drink, everyone greeted me with a smile and helped cheer me up. They were kind and ready to help whenever I needed something.

The setting was a big part of the stay. Once past reception, it felt like stepping into nature. On a rainy morning I woke to the rain, sat out on the balcony, and listened while looking at the trees. I won't forget that. I spent four nights and five days in the Deluxe Wooden. The room, bathroom, and balcony were all spacious, which was great. Monkey Forest is about a 6-7 minute walk away. Keep going another 7-8 minutes past the shops on both sides and you'll get to the Grand Palace and Art Market. For the price, it was a really good stay. I didn't order breakfast, so I can't comment on the food, but the staff, room upkeep, and care of the surrounding grounds all get full marks from me.

It felt peaceful, like waking up out in the Indonesian countryside. With no TV, I found my mind clearing a little, even though I already had my phone or tablet with me. The water was very clean too. At other places my filters turn brown quickly, but here it was like back in Korea. I'd happily stay again next time I'm in Ubud.

The breakfast was excellent, and the service was impeccable. There are several pools and laundry facilities on site as well. It's well placed for reaching the city, while still offering a peaceful atmosphere. There are two entrances, each with a different feel. The rooms facing the vegetable gardens were especially lovely, spacious, and clean.
