Dem Ayem Heritage Guest House

I only had half a day here, so I missed the chance to hear the birds in the backyard singing in the morning. That garden seems like a real treat for bird lovers, and I’d like to come back for a longer stay. The place has the feel of a traditional Javanese noble house, with a row of Javanese-style rooms set along an alley for privileged guests. Some updates to the rooms could make the stay better, but I thought the price was well worth it. Even at the entrance, the atmosphere felt distinctive from the surrounding area, and it brought back a nostalgic feeling.

A clean place with excellent service, in a prime spot just 700 meters from Tugu Jogjakarta. It feels like a homey place for a holiday with family or friends. Very well recommended.

The Javanese cultural atmosphere comes through in every corner, with artistic surroundings throughout the hotel. A good choice for families and couples. If you want a local cultural feel while staying in Yogyakarta, give it a try.

We booked two rooms through my girlfriend’s uncle while touring from Jakarta to Yogyakarta, and I’d happily return and try a different room. For the price, our stay was comfortable and livable, and the service and overall experience left me impressed. Our twin room had a large bathroom and a tiny outdoor patio connected to it. The room itself was rather dark and dingy, with traditional Javanese details like wood tones, brick, chandeliers, headboards, and light fixtures. Some paint was peeling. I forgot to take photos. The amenities were plentiful: small and large towels, toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap, shampoo, a TV, light snacks, bottled water, tea, coffee, a water pot, a lockable wardrobe, and plenty of outlets. Room service and cleaning were available, which felt like a nice extra at this price. We had one twin room and one single room. The location is excellent, near the famous Malioboro street and the tugu. Getting there was easy by the two-way streets, and low cars can enter without crossing steep humps. There’s plenty of parking under large trees, so cars are shaded from the Yogya heat. One downside is the nearby school and other educational institutions. Morning ceremonies brought kids singing and loud music. It works well for families or individuals. I didn’t see many other facilities, though that leaves you free to get out and explore Yogyakarta. My girlfriend’s uncle chose Dem Ayem Heritage Guest House for us.
