Eyre Square Hotel

The rooms are comfortable and nice, though they could use a refresh. Staff were brilliant, good for a bit of craic, and quick to notice a self-inflicted sore head. Breakfast was tasty and much appreciated. We’ve stayed twice in a year and would be back in a heartbeat. Gaillimh Abu and go Raibh mìle maith agat!

The elevator was out when we arrived, and we were told it would be fixed the next day. Three days later, no one had even looked at it, and other guests said it had been broken for days before we got there. The stairway had loose carpet in places and smelled like a dirty bathroom, though the bathroom off the bar actually smelled great. The hotel has good amenities and friendly staff, so fixing the elevator would make it a great place.

The location was fantastic, but we wouldn’t rush back after an okay stay that felt poor value. We paid €494.60 for two guests and two nights, including parking. We weren’t told on the phone about the closest or cheapest parking, so we paid €4 extra per day and had to walk farther with our luggage. The hotel felt cold too, including the bar and restaurant, and there wasn’t much of a festive atmosphere despite the season. The bar was nearly empty. When we came back with three friends around 9:30 on Sunday night, we couldn’t order Irish coffees because the coffee machine was off, so we went to another nearby bar. Our first room was no bigger than a box room, with just a double bed and hardly any space to move, so we asked reception and got a bigger one. Even with the radiator turned up and a plug-in heater running constantly, it stayed uncomfortably cold. The bathroom flooded within two minutes of running the shower, and we used bath towels to stop the water flowing toward the door.

It’s an easy walk from the train station, and the location is great. The rest was a letdown. Our room wasn’t accessible by elevator, so after the lift stopped on the fourth floor we had to carry our luggage up a full flight of stairs. The bathroom was nice, but the room was dirty and the bed’s headboards filthy. Staff offered little information beyond trying to sell breakfast to everyone. I’m glad I only paid for one night and am moving tomorrow. It wasn’t worth the price, especially after a long day of travel.
