Deogarh Mahal

We were traveling as part of a group from the UK, and only the Asian members of the group were given a filthy, tiny room that seemed fit for a servant. The English guests were given very nice rooms. We felt this was because we were Indian and expected to accept the room, so we complained. They moved us to a slightly better one, but the shower only had cold water. It felt discriminatory toward us as Indians.

The place makes a strong first impression, but it needs a lot of refurbishment and feels run down now. The Wi-Fi didn't work, and only a trickle came from the shower. We had to switch rooms because the duvets seemed not to have been washed in a long time, the carpet was stained, and the mattresses in the window alcove were so dirty I wouldn't sit on them. It feels overrated, and its old shine is gone.

The views are lovely for photos, and you can spend the whole day at the mahal. It's a good place for kids, the food was really tasty, and the hospitality was good. When the AC stopped working, they changed our room. If you want a taste of royal life, it's worth visiting.

We only stayed for one night and wished we could have stayed longer. Playing pickleball with the owner and his family was a lovely surprise. My wife hurt herself, and the staff responded immediately with ice and a wheelchair, then wheeled her to her room and served dinner there. The next morning, Vikram came with us to the pharmacy for compression bandages. They couldn't have been more helpful.
