I’ve visited most of the city's well-known luxury hotels, so I know what a proper 5-star stay feels like. This place falls nowhere near that standard, and I’d give it one star without hesitation. From the moment I arrived, nobody acknowledged me or offered a greeting, directions, or a seat. I had to find somewhere and settle in by myself. The staff seemed uninterested and uninformed, knew very little about the products, and showed no warmth, attentiveness, or effort. Calling this a 5-star property is misleading. A very disappointing experience, and definitely not recommended.

Breakfast came with the booking, and the food was good. My stay was comfortable, but the basics need attention before this feels like a 5-star hotel. I stayed at HHI Hotel Kolkata in Room 813 from 24-27 Dec 2025 and got the high floor I asked for, yet the window glass was so dirty I couldn't see outside. That made the high floor pointless and felt like a waste of money. I’ve attached photos. There was no separate bike parking for staying guests, so bikes were left with general visitors' vehicles, and the bathroom flush was extremely hard and inconvenient to use.

The location was our main reason for staying. It's right in the heart of Kolkata, with connections to all kinds of city transport. The people were good and the service was nice, and guests can have visitors in their rooms like at a standard hotel. There's also a small but decent lounge by reception. Breakfast was tasty and fairly standard. I'm vegetarian, so I had luchi with alur sabji, as well as idly and vada. The hotel is old and not a global 5-star property, though it's a good standard hotel. The rooms were okay, with a faint old smell that didn't bother me during the stay.

The fish fingers were burnt, the chicken tikka was undercooked, and the buffet food tasted cold and stale. I went to the dinner buffet with colleagues, about ten people, and some of our guests stayed for two days. The food was very bad and definitely below HHI's standard. Zero stars for the food. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

The bathroom upkeep was only slightly better than at the railway station, and the hot water in the tub was barely warm. Meanwhile, when I checked in at 10 pm, the room AC was set to 10 degrees even though it was 14 degrees outside. I felt like I'd been put in an igloo, and it was the same again the next day. Is electricity really that cheap there? Housekeeping was atrocious. When I complained, the GM still tried to justify it. Breakfast choices were very limited, and I found cockroaches right by the tea containers. When I pointed them out, the person in charge didn't even listen properly.
