It's close to the beach, and if being near promenade beach is your priority, this could be an option. Just don't expect a luxury stay or a beach view. The property is very old, though they seem to be trying to maintain it. The rooms are quite small, with a cupboard and tiny table, and they give you two single beds even when the booking is for a couple or two people. I really don't understand the very high ratings given the age of the place.

My first visit to pondy went well, and the weekend price was affordable compared with nearby hotels. Everything was superb, though they don't allow drinking inside. There is a separate sit-out area for smoking and drinking.

Scooty rentals are just across the street, and the place is right in the main white field area. Everything about the stay was good.

The rooms were just okay, and the mosquitoes and lizards were really horrible. I went because podouke restaurant is in the same building. It's affordable when visiting pondi and close to white town, french street, and Rock beach, but the rooms themselves are only so-so.

The reception language can be tricky: the staff on site mainly speak local languages, and the English-speaking person is usually somewhere else and only reachable by phone. It wasn't a major problem for us, but it's something to know for check-in or if you need immediate help. Kailash Guest House is a simple, no-frills place for travelers who care more about exploring than amenities. The rooms are basic and spare, but comfortable enough for a night's sleep. It's a useful base for dropping off bags, heading out for the day, then returning for a quiet night. A good find, especially in Pondicherry, where accommodation can often be overpriced.
