A budget-friendly choice close to all the hospitals, with a large parking area beside the property that can fit plenty of vehicles. A very reputable Salem family owns and manages the hotel, and they make sure things are in order. There’s a bar and a non-vegetarian mess on site. Vegetarians can walk to Mahashiv vegetarian restaurant nearby.

Travellers Inn makes a convenient stop on the road between Chennai and the Nilgiris. It’s just off NH47 near the Salem Toll Gate in Vaikundam, Sankagiri, so you can rest without going out of your way. The inn has clean, comfortable rooms with air conditioning and sanitized bathrooms, suitable for families. Rates are reasonable and often include complimentary breakfast. New Saravana Bhavan, the vegetarian restaurant on site, is popular with travelers and locals and offers good food. There’s also a convenience store, an ATM, and covered parking, which add to the convenience.

The room deserves 4 stars, but booking gets 3. The booking software needs to be simpler: dates, room count, number of people or pax, and check-in and check-out times should be easy to enter. Rates for single and double occupancy also need to be stated clearly. Showing one price and changing it later when there are two guests feels like a hidden tactic. Whom are you trying to cheat?

It’s a little more than a hostel, with TV, food, laundry, and car parking available. The rooms are clean, the bathrooms have heaters, and the staff are friendly. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are offered at reasonable prices. Traffic noise is the big drawback. You can hear it even in a deep sleep. I’d stay for one night, but for a longer stay I’d look elsewhere.
