Our biggest shock came when I looked behind the couch after my phone slipped between the cushions. The cushions smelled of pee, and there were hundreds of dead bugs on the floor, crushed into the couch, and stuck to the wall. We only found them late on our second and final night, and after working all day we were too exhausted to look for somewhere else. The host refused even a partial refund and scolded us for asking. Finding the house was difficult too. The GPS got us to the general area, but more than ten other rentals were packed close together. Tourists kept walking past the windows at all hours, so we had to leave every blind shut for both days. The cleaning fee was charged, yet the beds weren't made and we were told to strip them before leaving. There were long black hairs under the chair and sofa legs, brown stains and splatters around the kitchen, especially by the trash, and hair and toothpaste drops on the bathroom floor and in the shower. We heard mice in the attic while trying to sleep. The heat couldn't be adjusted, so with the windows shut we were boiling and with them open we were freezing. The water was lukewarm and undrinkable, and there were no pitchers to cool it in the fridge. Basic kitchen items were missing too, including oven mitts, a cutting board, drinking glasses, and enough plates, bowls, and cutlery for one meal. A bulb in the entry hall was broken, making it hard to get in or out, and the Wi-Fi failed for much of the time we tried to use it.

Chalet 4 was a roomy two-bedroom house, with a big kitchen and living area. We had everything we needed for cooking, including a coffee maker and coffee, and the heated floors kept the temperature pleasant. The dark blinds were especially welcome in summer, when they made it possible to sleep despite the midnight sun. The location worked really well for exploring the southern Westfjords, between Latrabjerg and Isafjordur via Dynjandi, and only a short drive from the Baldur ferry. There's also a small geothermal pool across the road. The owner was quick to respond and very helpful, taking care of whatever we needed. A fantastic place to stay.

The house itself was lovely, with comfortable armchairs, good furnishings, and a large shower. But the owners seemed reluctant to do much. We had to make our own beds, then strip them in the morning and put the sheets in a bag so the owner wouldn't have to handle that. We were also asked to empty the dishwasher and put everything away, which the owners had done at the other guesthouses where we stayed. A lot of basics were missing: sugar, tea, salt, a colander, and even a pillow.

Our apartment behind the main guest house was roomy and extremely clean, and everything had been recently remodeled. It ended up being our favorite place of the whole Iceland trip. There's a restaurant about 15 minutes down the road with some really tasty food.

Rocky, the owner's nickname, really went out of his way to make our stay enjoyable. He even emailed directions to local sights and places to eat or fuel up. There's a natural thermal bath and pool right across the street, and sheep were playing on hay bales just outside our back window. The place was a great value, with a nice kitchen stocked with utensils, pots, and pans, plus two rooms with comfortable beds. After two hip replacements on one side, I really appreciate a good night's sleep, and I got one here. A great experience.
