Bring an eye mask and ear buds for the wind and noisy neighbours. I still slept great. The tents were cosy and well equipped, with a heater for when it got cold. Mine had a leak, but switching tents was quick. Check-in is self-service, with easy instructions sent ahead, and staff are around, mostly cleaning. The bathroom setup could be better, since there’s only one small cubicle in the middle of the shower room, but it was very clean. Warm showers and a good breakfast.
Breakfast was generous: capsule and instant coffee, good tea, fruit, homemade pancakes and waffles, Icelandic hot dog sausages, croissants, granola, cereal, bread, salami, ham, cheese, skyr, and rice milk. The common kitchen was clean, spacious, bright, and very well equipped. The whole former school guesthouse was large and clean. We hardly saw any staff, but everything was freely available, and the instructions arrived on time and were clear. The tent was a dream. My mom and I were in awe when we unzipped it, especially after staying in an ordinary camping tent two days earlier. It was wide, covered in cosy rugs, and had two armchairs, two bean bags, two heaters, and a bench. It felt very new, with three zippers to keep bugs out. I was honestly sad I don’t live somewhere like that. Selfoss is a great base for the Golden Circle, and it’s close to one of the lakes. This is a hidden gem. Cosy doesn’t even cover it, it’s lovely!
We booked partly because breakfast buffet was included, and confirmed that with the host Klaudia after booking. That evening we messaged her to ask about the details, only to be told the next day, “unfortunately our hotel does not offer breakfast.” We never got check-in instructions. A young lady on staff asked us for our room, or tent, number, which we’d never been given. After waiting a while, we finally got a number and had to check ourselves in. The tent itself was nice but full of spiders, and the wind was crazy noisy. AVOID AT ALL COST. FALSE ADVERTISING.
I booked through airbnb months ahead, but on the day of check-in, at 1930pm, they said they couldn’t see the booking and cancelled it. I’d already driven 1.5 hrs to the accommodation after getting off an international flight from Australia.
