Birta Guesthouse

The WiFi signal was strong and extremely fast, and the bed was comfortable, so I slept very well. The shower got hot enough and the water stayed inside the shower area. The room was large and comfortable, and the apartment was clean and tidy. Coffee and tea were included. There’s easy parking right outside the guesthouse, handy for driving around the small town to shop or refill gas. I’d highly recommend staying here in town. Just remember to take your shoes off and leave them beside the doors. The lock takes a bit of technique, but there are hints in the instructions next to the door. I’d specifically requested a room with a private washroom, and it was super lovely.

The house feels cosy, and the upstairs seating area is lovely. Each room has a useful information folder put together by the owners. There’s a shared kitchen on the first level and three bathrooms with showers for six rooms; two separate rooms outside have their own private bathrooms. The big drawback is how thin the walls are, you can hear everything. The beds are incredibly small. I’m only 161 cm and 50 kg, and nearly rolled off twice during the night.

Getting checked in was quick and easy, but my room had a strange smell. The worse problem was the tap water in the shared bathrooms, which smelled strongly like rotten eggs. It was so bad I didn’t want to use it for a shower or anything. Maybe low usage during corona was the reason, but that just wasn’t acceptable.

The dishes are self-service, and we could hear loud noises from the rooms above us. The shower was incredibly hot and there was no way to make it colder. The house and furniture are old, and although the sheets looked clean, finding a condom under our bed made the place seem unsanitary. We didn’t enjoy staying at Birta Guesthouse, especially at such a very high price. Not worth it.
