Hekla Cabin 3 Volcano and Glacier View

We never did catch the northern lights, but this is still our favorite place in Iceland. The sunrise views are lovely, and the owner was so attentive. It fit four of us comfortably. I could happily spend a week here getting away from everyone.

The huge windows meant we could watch the scenery and the polar light from inside, without having to deal with the weather. This was also the only night of our trip when we got to see the aurora, and the cabin’s location helped with our luck. Our friends, whose wedding had brought us to Iceland, even chose the cottage for their first wedding photos together. Seeing each other in the wedding dress there was really touching. The place felt much more intimate and cozy in person than it looked in the pictures. It was clean, comfortable, in good condition, and welcoming. The kitchen had plenty of utensils and dry food, a thoughtful touch we appreciated. We did have trouble with the wifi, so had no internet while there. That didn’t bother us, though I can imagine it being inconvenient for some people. We had a hard time leaving. It was easily our favorite place we stayed in Iceland, and if you’re nearby, it’s a great choice.

The hut has windows all around, so we got to see the northern lights on both nights. Such a cool experience. A snowstorm forced us to stay an extra night, and the host let us stay for free. He also checked in to make sure we were alright. Really great stay.

The host kindly let us stay past checkout while we waited for a mechanic to take our car to a nearby workshop for a flat tyre. Check-in instructions were clear and easy, and the cottage was cozy with a well-equipped kitchen. Just be aware the road in is gravel and dark if you arrive late. A great place to stay.
