Eldstó Guesthouse

We were running low on fuel, and getting hungry, during an epic winter road trip, so we stopped in Hvolsvöllur. This restaurant was across the road from the petrol station and turned out to be a perfect choice for dinner. We had Fish Gratin, a local Lasagna, and a couple of drinks. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Highly recommend 🇮🇸🤓👌🏻

We walked over from our accommodation after hearing this was a good place to eat in town. The burgers and fries we ordered were both very good, especially the seasoned fries. Everything came out hot and was presented nicely. It was quiet when we visited, and there’s an art show room at the back. There’s plenty of parking, and the restaurant is easy to get to at one of the main intersections. The menu had a good selection. I’d recommend it if you’re in the area.

The garlic bread is marvelous, easily the star of the meal. The lamb stew and fish gratin were good too, and the staff were there to help if you weren’t sure what to choose. It’s a cozy, comfortable place for dinner on the road, with local dishes alongside food inspired by other cuisines, like poke bowls. The local lager is worth ordering too.

The food was delicious. We had hamburgers and shrimp soup, both excellent, and our servers were sweet and polite. Everything arrived promptly. They wouldn’t let us tip and explained that tipping isn’t an Icelandic custom. The bathrooms were very clean, and it’s a cozy space with interesting iceramic art. Videos showing the artist making the volcanic ceramic were entertaining.
