Fosshotel Westfjords

The staff were friendly and helpful, and both breakfast and dinner were good. It’s a pleasant hotel in a lovely spot with great views, though the rooms, while clean and well equipped, felt a little soulless. There isn’t much in the town, but there is a small restaurant worth trying. Getting a room with the best view seems difficult for independent travelers since those rooms get booked up. We booked in January for a late-July stay and still got a rear view, though that was okay. All in all, nice enough.

My room had a lovely sea view, and it was modern and practical for a one-night stay. I was on the second floor in a basic room. Light sleepers should know the flagpoles outside made quite a racket in the wind, and it carried on all night while I was there. The bathroom was small but functional, though there was no rinse glass. The hairdryer didn’t work and had strands of a previous guest’s hair on it. That wasn’t a big deal for me, but it might bother someone else, and in that weather I could have used it to dry wet clothes.

The bartender made a great impression. He’d only been working there for two weeks, had come from Poland, and really understood hospitality. He gave us a great experience, and if I had a restaurant, I’d hire him in a heartbeat. The reception staff also gave us a lovely welcome, and the rooms were nice. Great hotel.

What made this feel like home for our four nights in Patreksfjörður was the staff. Anne, Dora, Hubert and Sam, along with others, were exceptionally gracious and went out of their way to make our stay comfortable. Anne especially helped us several times with road and weather conditions and ideas for adventures. It was hard to say goodbye when we checked out on our last morning. I’d return in a heartbeat. My family and I used the hotel as our base in the Westfjords, and loved its waterside setting and the restaurant food. I highly recommend the Arctic char. Our room was clean and adequate, with a lovely view of the mountain behind the hotel. We were lucky enough to see it in all kinds of weather, from rain to snow and even rainbows.
