Villa San Francesco

This turned out to be fine dining, and the service was so-so. We ordered three mains. The lamb with potato had juicy meat and a tasty sauce that worked perfectly together. The grilled chicken was unlike others I’ve had, with a distinctive red sauce that wasn’t bolognese, though it wasn’t my favorite. The duck breast with crispy pork was tender but a little plain for me, and felt too dry without more sauce. The portions were smaller than the fine dining meals we’d had in Sienna and Florence. For what we paid, I wasn’t very impressed.

I was here in january and the restaurant was shut, but the bar was open. The staff were friendly. The tiramisu was one of the best I’ve ever tried, and the squeezed orange juice and caffe machiato were both perfect. I’ll visit every day until I leave Assisi.

You can’t beat this spot for a view of the Basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi! Grab something to eat, have a drink, or get an ice cream while you take it all in. The atmosphere is friendly, even when the place is busy.

We only had half an hour to spare before dinner and were craving a spritz, so we stopped here. Such a nice surprise: the service was friendly, the sunset view felt romantic, and two strong spritz came with loads of chips and peanuts. The bill was just ten euros. The usual tourist rule is to avoid eating or drinking somewhere with a view, especially of an attraction, or in a main piazza unless you’re ready to pay a lot for poor food. That wasn’t our experience here at all.
