We had a truly awful stay. On arrival at 10:15 pm, we were charged a €25 late check-in fee, and the front door was chained and locked at night. This place felt like Fawlty Towers. If management spent money on cleaning and renovations, it might be okay, but as it stands, avoid it. The first room had black mould behind the bedside lockers, which I found while looking for a plug, plus a blood-like or brown stain on the wall and lots of dark dirt marks on the carpet. I asked to move straight away. The next room was less unacceptable, but still had a similarly stained carpet, a foul drain smell, and noisy old bed springs. We bought bathroom fragrance and left the window open in January. Our children were in the room above. Their carpet was unstained, but the parquet floor creaked at the slightest touch, so we could tell when they were awake. I’d booked because of the breakfast. The cappuccino from the bar was good on the first two weekdays, but the semi-stale apricot croissants and stale cereal were unpleasant. At the weekend breakfast moved to the “restaurant,” where the coffee machine looked disgusting and uncleaned. There was white floating debris in the coffee, and the rest of the food was just as bad as during the week. Find self-catering accommodation elsewhere, anything would be better. A rolled cigarette butt stayed on the fire alarm switch throughout our stay, even after cleaning, which suggests a dangerous disregard for guests’ safety.

The food is very good and there’s plenty of it. The hotel can handle large groups, and the reception area is big enough for almost 100 people. Staff are helpful and speak some English, so getting by is easy. Check-in and checkout were straightforward, and the hotel is biker friendly. The location is handy: the bus station is right outside, and the train station, town centre, and shops are a few minutes’ walk away. It’s less than five minutes by car to the main road and highway. There’s parking opposite, and the hotel is easy to find. The rooms are clean but need upgrading, nowhere near three-star standard, perhaps one and a half stars at most. Wi-Fi slows down a lot when many people use it at once.

The food was superb every one of the six nights we stayed, and the staff were friendly. The rooms are a decent size, but the beds are very basic and the showers can be hit or miss. Watch out for rooms with balconies, as the railing is rather low. It’s a functional, basic hotel in a decent spot, just a short walk from Bardonecchia’s main shopping street.

The price is the only upside, given how expensive other hotels in the area are. The pictures are misleading. There’s mould everywhere, especially in the restaurant, and the dirty carpet looks as if it hasn’t been cleaned in about 30 years. The rooms smell awful. Staff aren’t professional and often disappear, leaving keys, luggage, and rooms unattended and accessible to anyone. Avoid this place.

The building and rooms are a little old, but they’re well kept, and you can still see the charm it must have had as a very luxurious hotel. The location is excellent. Breakfast was varied and very good. The breakfast chef and waiter were so sweet, and I enjoyed chatting with them. The people at reception were lovely, helpful, and polite too. They really make you feel at home.
