In summer, you can climb the tower’s inner staircase to enjoy striking views over Florence. The gate is a historic monument as well as a viewpoint, and one of the best-preserved parts of the city’s old walls. It was built around 1324 in late Gothic style and originally belonged to the southern stretch of the medieval fortifications.

An impressive remnant of Florence’s medieval walls, this 14th-century gate is one of the few sections still preserved. It marks the old southern entrance to the historic city, rising above the Oltrarno neighborhood near the Arno. Worth a visit.

The waterfalls near the tower are really pretty too, which might be a little different from what the other reviews mention!

The tower stands by itself in Piazza Giuseppe Poggi in Oltrarno, Florence, Tuscany, Italy. It was first built in 1324 as part of a gate in the city’s former defensive walls, and is 115 feet tall. You can reach the top by climbing 160 steps. Arnolfo di Cambio’s designs included the tower and gate as part of the walls that encircled Florence. Most of those walls were demolished in the 19th century during the Risanamento urban renewal project, partly led by Giuseppe Poggi. This tower was spared in part because of its panoramic city views. The WC is visible too.
