Hotel Aldobrandini

For a cheap one star hotel, I thought it was much nicer than expected. The WiFi worked fine, the shower was great, the beds were made daily, and the staff were nice. There was no room safe, but that wasn't much of an issue. I was there during peak season. I also saw someone ask about bedbugs in an earlier review. I didn't find any in my room, and the air conditioning worked fine. You're paying for a budget one star place, and that's what you get. People giving it less than four stars may not be used to traveling on a tight budget. If you want luxury, don't book a one star hotel.

The place is pretty modest, so keep your expectations realistic, but it's decent. The location is hard to beat: it's just around the corner from the main sights and very close to the railway station, which is handy if you don't want to haul your luggage across town.

It's tucked away in Aldobrandini square, so look for number 8. The hotel sign is a tiny plaque. Ring the buzzer, take the elevator up two floors, then climb the stairs. The room was clean, the hot water pressure was great, and they offer coffee options with a croissant and jellies.

The location was the main plus, since we could walk everywhere, and the gentleman who welcomed us was lovely, friendly, and warm. But the room was extremely basic, with dated, shoddy furniture, a tiny TV, and air conditioning that didn't work. There was no hairdryer or even a drinking cup, the blankets were stained, and the bathroom had mould and limescale. The owners smoked indoors, which was unpleasant. Breakfast was black machine coffee in stained crockery, orange juice in a plastic cup, and a croissant. I didn't have the coffee. We were glad to stay only two nights. It feels like the owner relies on the location and doesn't need to update the rooms or services.
