Hotel Villa Il Castagno

The room was pleasant, had everything I needed, including AC, and felt like good value for the price. I had a nice stay and would recommend the hotel. The one thing that bothered me was how clearly you could hear toilets flushing. I'd read complaints about reception staff. A friendly woman welcomed me, though later that evening a man took over and didn't answer when I said hello. He seemed to ignore me entirely. Maybe that was the supposedly arrogant receptionist people mention.

Breakfast was decent, and the tidy room was nice for the price. It's a 20-25 minutes walk to the city center. Mosquitoes were the one downside, though they may have come in through open windows because of the area. Otherwise, I was delighted with the stay. I'm surprised by some of the unfair sounding negative reviews. If you want a much more luxurious hotel, choose one of those. People seem to pay the lowest price and still expect five star service 🙄.

We stayed one night, and at check-out we accidentally left a wallet on top of a tall wardrobe. We'd hidden it there before heading out to see the city, where it wasn't visible from normal standing height. About an hour later we remembered it and went back. Staff handed the wallet to us, but the money was gone. They said it had been empty when they found it. We reported what happened to local police, then returned and asked the administrator to make an official record. The staff became aggressive, refused to help, raised their voices, and even tried to call the police on us for reasons we couldn't understand. The police wouldn't come. We suspect hotel staff because they found the hidden wallet so quickly. Do they clean the tops of wardrobes every day? We're worried there may be hidden cameras in the room. The administration also refused to investigate. Other reviews had mentioned that anything left in a room after checkout becomes hotel property. Our money was stolen from the room, in our view.

The bathroom water smelled like sewer water, and an insect came out of the sink. The rooms were old and dirty, the breakfast selection was tiny, and the WiFi felt stuck in the 80s, slower than a snail. Staff were so rude and aggressive that talking to them was impossible. They took the AC remote, so I couldn't use the AC. When I asked where it was, they said they didn't know. I left in the morning, leaving my room key at the entrance where anyone could take it and get into the room. The remote was on the bed then. When I came back, it had magically disappeared. I've traveled for 30 years and this is the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. Just don't book it. Run...
