The Excelsior, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Florence

The rooftop bar is a great stop for a cocktail and snack, with fabulous views of Florence and seating both inside and out. Hotel guests clearly get priority, which you can see from the moment you arrive at the front desk, but they will make room for you in the end.

The beds and pillows were the most comfortable I’ve had in a hotel, and the staff were the nicest I’ve experienced. We travel a lot and usually choose higher-end luxury hotels, and this one still exceeded our expectations. It felt luxurious throughout, in a central but quiet spot. Don’t miss the complimentary wine hour, and ask Francesca and the concierge for local tips, they were wonderfully helpful. We loved our stay and would come back.

Marta, Francesca, Viola, and Beatrice made us feel at home with their warmth, attention, and excellent service. The whole team was welcoming and helpful during our visit. The hotel’s position by the Arno River made it easy to walk to Florence’s most famous sights. We also loved the building’s historic character and interiors, which combine elegance, charm, and classic Florentine style. The new lobby, rooftop bar, and restaurant look stunning, and I had a very good stay at The Excelsior Florence. I returned after a couple of years to find it rebranded from Westin to The Luxury Collection. The bedroom is nice, but the rooms were only lightly refreshed and the bathroom badly needs renovation. Service was good overall, though it fell short of what I expect from a Luxury Collection. There was no welcome amenity at all, which surprised me, especially after my stay at the Gritti Palace three days earlier, where I received a proper bottle of champagne along with the usual Bonvoy Platinum benefits. This was a birthday trip, and the four balloons on the bed with a note were a nice gesture, but disappointing by comparison. There’s a lot of potential here, though the team needs to move from Westin-style service to Luxury Collection standards.
