At aperitivo time, my husband and I stopped at this bar while walking around Matera and asked to use one of the four unreserved tables. The waiter refused, saying they were for groups of four. A real mess for a place in Matera that depends on tourists. I don't recommend it.

We only came for a late lunch at 3 pm at the hotel's restaurant, “Dulcis in Fundo”; we didn't stay there. The view is lovely, so perhaps it's worth stopping for an espresso, but I'd avoid eating. The food was average at best, the bread was stale, and the service wasn't very good. We were late for Italian lunch hours, sure, but the meal still wasn't worth the effort. It felt like a tourist trap.

We arrived at 9:30 pm to find the doors locked, the lights off, and nobody answering either the phone or the door. We'd been in touch with Ai Quarti Sottani throughout the day to let them know our travel was delayed, and we had non-refundable reservations for that night. We were left without a room, far from home. Another guest with a reservation was also outside, unable to check in, so at least two bookings were locked out that night. I strongly advise staying away. This feels like a sham.

The hotel shut before I could get there, so I couldn't check in. Guests should come first, but management seemed more concerned about an employee. The lack of basic customer service appalled me. Horrible management, and the worst hotel experience I've had.

The view was amazing, which made the bad food and poor service at the hotel's restaurant all the more disappointing. We had lunch there today, and it felt like a typical tourist trap.
