I ended up not staying at the apartment, but the host was so thoughtful that I wanted to leave a good review anyway. I’d booked two nights, and on the morning of check-in she messaged to say Matera’s tap water had been contaminated with bacteria. The mayor had warned people not to use it for drinking or personal hygiene, and the water company was bringing in clean drinking water by truck. She offered a free cancellation. Once we confirmed the water wasn’t even suitable for showering, we decided to cancel. Since we’d booked through a travel agency, she contacted them to make sure we received a full refund. She also suggested staying in Altamura, about 30 minutes from Matera, which worked out well; we found a nice hotel there. Later that evening, after the warning had been lifted, she messaged us with that update too. We never got to stay at her place, but she was honest and kind, and I’d recommend her.

The location is handy, very close to the city’s main sights, and the home has everything you need, with tidy rooms and furnishings. What really made it special was Stefania. There’s a café downstairs with delicious breakfasts, and the apartment is only a few steps from the centre. It was clean, cozy, and roomy enough for five of us. Stefania was a wonderful, helpful host and gave us lots of useful information. Sabrina

Just a five-minute walk from the historic centre, this is a charming place. The rooms were clean and well cared for, and the owner was especially kind and courteous. Top marks from me, highly recommended.
