The private bathroom in the listing wasn't actually inside the room. To get to it, we had to go out and cross the shared hallway. Cleanliness was poor too: there was hair in the sheets, and when I reported it, the owner said, "it can happen." The room had no fridge, wastebasket, or toiletries. The only bin was in the bathroom. The air conditioner had no remote, so we couldn't use it. After we changed rooms, they gave us the same towels we'd already used.\n\nThere were problems with payment as well. The owner wouldn't take a card and required cash. I didn't have enough on me, so I offered to pay part by deposit and the rest after withdrawing money. Instead, I was told to go get cash right away, with the owner "taking me to the ATM." When I asked for a receipt, I got an incomplete document and still haven't received a valid one. On departure day, we were also asked to tidy the room and take out the rubbish ourselves.\n\nThe stay was marked by poor cleanliness, poor service, and a lack of professionalism. I wouldn't recommend it.

The real surprise at breakfast was Mr. Peppe, Porzia's father and a master pastry chef. Every morning he made us his now-famous homemade focaccia and served it with the kindness of a man from another era. Porzia's hospitality is a big reason I'd recommend this B&B. It really feels like home, spacious, nicely furnished, and welcoming. The Sassi are a pleasant 1.5 km walk away. Thanks again.

The photos of the supposed basement on Booking.com gave a very different impression from what we found. It was basically a garage being used as a place for three people to live, with no windows and poor cleanliness. Other residents kept coming and going to park in the garages next to ours, so there was constant traffic. A thoroughly negative stay, I really wouldn't recommend it.

The owner's warmth and friendliness did a lot to improve our impression, and that’s why we still came away with a positive rating. The room itself was lacking shampoo, a hairdryer, a bin, and a fridge; the pillows were old and uncomfortable, and the French window shutter broke the first time we used it. We also waited 40 minutes for the owner to check us in when we arrived at "your home in Matera."

The kids will remember this trip for a long time. We had a lovely family feel during our stay, especially over the generous breakfasts with tasty homemade focaccia and ciambellone. Our apartment was clean and well looked after, and an easy, pleasant walk from the Sassi, so we could avoid the humidity there. The owner greeted us warmly, helped with everything, and gave us plenty of tips and information for seeing the city.
