Palazzo degli Abati

It takes some effort to find the hotel among Matera's winding streets, and the steep climbs and steps are part of getting around here. Still, it’s well placed for exploring on foot, with the main sights, restaurants, and viewpoints a short walk away. Once we reached Palazzo degli Abati, the panoramic views above the Sassi were breathtaking. Our room was carved into the rock, full of atmosphere but still elegant and equipped with modern comforts. Waking up to that view felt like stepping back in time while enjoying five-star comfort. The setting is magical, with historic charm and understated luxury. Palazzo degli Abati is a romantic, unusual stay steeped in history, and a real gem for anyone visiting Matera. 🌅

The breakfast selection was one of the best I've seen, and all the staff were lovely and very helpful. The hotel also sent us useful information before our trip. Our cave bedroom had a glass floor, with the area once used for baking bread visible underneath. The cave hotel has a lot of history, having once been part of the church where the abbot's slept. Rooms above the church have now been converted with all the mod cons. What a fantastic experience. Please use this hotel if you visit the sassi in Matera. Excellent.

The cave room was the highlight of our Italy trip, and the hotel is in a quiet spot away from the tourist crowds. We found the rooms comfortable and luxurious. The patio dining area has spectacular views of Matera, and the morning buffet includes fruit, focaccia, and a selection of meats. One of my favorite hotels of all time.

The hotel made arrival easy by sending detailed, accurate walking directions and explaining our four parking options ahead of time. We got lucky and found free street parking about a three-minute walk away. Try Via Gian Battista Ventisuglia if you can. Our cave suite Sapuan was unlike anywhere else, modern and hip, with a fantastic view of Sasso Barisano. The staff were excellent, and Cristina gave us two great restaurant recommendations. Palazzo degli Abati is in a special place, and we loved our stay in Matera. I only wish we'd booked at least one more night.
