Hotel Dei Capitani

We had an easy time parking: there was a drop-off spot right at the hotel, then free parking a short walk away. The hotel gave us 24-hour parking certificates, included in the stay, to display in the car. Our kids loved the good-sized pool, where you can take in the view while swimming, and Montalcino is a gem. The nearby towns and villages are lovely too, with Siena close enough for a day trip. I'd also recommend St Antimo Abbey, a beautiful building in a peaceful valley. I stayed here with my partner, our children aged 10 and 8, and two other family groups. The staff were delightful. Our clean, stylish room was roomy and had air conditioning; it was a family room with a mezzanine opening onto a traditional Tuscan tiled and beamed roof. Each morning we woke to a cloud inversion in the valley, then had a delicious breakfast on the terrace with poplars and cypresses stretching into the distance. Eviva dei Capitani! Such an amazing hotel. I hope to return.

I was so taken with the place that I forgot to get my phone out. Both our rooms had views, and the pool overlooking the scenery was an unexpected treat. The staff were polite and professional, with a relaxed, full service Italian pace. Pack light, since there are stairs and parking isn't very close. In more than two weeks of travelling in Italy, this was the first place to serve hard boiled eggs at breakfast, which worked perfectly with my dietary issues!

The view really is breathtaking, and the pool is great. Montalcino is an amazing town too. But the location and scenery are what make this hotel; the service was below average. The person checking us in was almost rude and didn't engage, and gave us no information about the A/C, pool, or procedures. Internet access was poor at best. Breakfast was okay, about a 6 out of 10, while the beds were hard and uncomfortable and the shower tiny. Don't expect a four-star hotel, because this isn't one. I'm sure there are better options nearby. Such a great view, wasted.

Pick a superior room for the sunrise view. The room feels old fashioned, but it was very clean and the bedding was good. Soundproofing isn't great, though the views make up for it. Breakfast was good, the service was nice, and the coffee was strong and tasty.
