The roof terraces are especially worth a visit. Walking across the roof gives you a different view of the cathedral, close-up details of its architecture, and lovely panoramas of Palermo and the surrounding mountains. The building itself is one of the most interesting cathedrals I’ve visited anywhere. Its many changes over the centuries have brought together Norman, Gothic, Baroque, and other styles, reflecting Sicily’s long, complex history. A worthwhile stop in the city for both the history and the chance to explore it from above.

The rooftop view over Palermo and the surrounding mountains was unforgettable, so don’t miss going up if you visit. I was there in May, and the cathedral was one of my trip highlights. Inside, the high arches, detailed decoration, royal tombs, and peaceful atmosphere all give you a strong sense of the generations who have passed through. Outside, the grand façade brings together Norman, Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles layered over centuries. It’s a remarkable meeting of art, faith, and culture. I was genuinely happy to see it. More than a monument, it feels like a living part of Palermo’s soul.

We were surprised that entry to the cathedral was free, which made the visit feel welcoming and genuine. Inside, it’s simple, solemn, and deeply sacred, without too much decoration. There weren’t many visitors, so we could take our time in the peaceful space. The day had been grey and drizzly, but seeing the cathedral from the square still stunned me. It’s magnificent, elegant, and balanced, with a quiet presence that draws your attention. Its different architectural influences are woven into one harmonious building, and the façades, arches, and towers all speak to the city’s long, complex history. Even under overcast skies it impressed me, and I can imagine how striking it would look in bright sunshine. A rainy-day visit still left a lasting impression.

The cathedral feels calm, thoughtful, and deeply artistic, a place to slow down and notice how centuries of cultures coexist in its architecture. Traces of its past as a mosque remain visible outside, naturally layered into the walls, as if nothing has been overwritten. Inside, the floor sundial marks the months through light, a lovely reminder of how space and time can work together.

We paid for the self-guided tour deeper into the Duomo and found plenty to see, including relics, artworks, precious documents, beautiful sarcophagi in the crypts, and the crown of the Queen of Aragon. Inside the cathedral are the resting places of Fredrick II and many others, and the interpretive signs are very good and available in multiple languages. The roof was closed that day because of the tempest (Hurricane Charlie), which was a shame, but the Duomo still doesn’t disappoint. This glorious work of architecture and art has so many layers of history. A must-see inside and out in Palermo. On the street, there’s also a beautiful statue of St. Rosalia, the city’s patron saint, in her boat used in a procession a few years back.
