The place had an odd charm, and by the end we’d got used to living there. I spent a month there with three others while studying abroad. The decor was interesting, with lots of mirrors and a bedroom full of paintings. It became oddly lovable as temporary housing, maybe a kind of Stockholm syndrome, despite how absurd some things were. The laundry room door was broken and wouldn’t lock the whole time. The shower kept swinging between scalding and freezing. The kitchen was too small for one person to comfortably do dishes and cook, and there was a little second-floor area about five feet tall, reached by narrow stairs beside the kitchen. The washing machine broke in our last week, and nobody came to help after we called the landlords.
