Domus Libera

During our honeymoon at Domus Libera, we had one of the most disappointing stays we’ve ever had. We felt unable to stay in the room and had to pay for alternative accommodation ourselves. I strongly recommend finding somewhere else in Rome. The room was extremely noisy, with thin sound insulation that let us hear conversations, footsteps and movement from nearby rooms day and night. We also found a hairdryer with a damaged power cord that had been cut and repaired with tape, which raised serious safety and maintenance concerns. There was visible black mold throughout the shower area, cracking and deterioration on the walls, signs of continuing moisture damage, and a strong moldy smell throughout our stay. I attached room photos and screenshots of the hotel’s own messages acknowledging mold and saying the only other room available also had it. Management’s proposed solution was another room they admitted had mold, just “not as bad.” When we complained about the mold, damp damage, smell and electrical safety, management brushed off the room’s condition as “signs of age and wear.” They refused our refund request even though they couldn’t provide a mold-free alternative. As I write this, we still haven’t received a refund, and the hotel has stopped answering our emails. The property advertises itself as a 4 star hotel, but I’ve stayed in many 3 star hotels around Europe that were cleaner, better maintained and provided much better service. Maintenance problems can happen, but the way a hotel responds matters. Domus Libera failed both in the room’s condition and in how it handled our concerns. The room was unacceptable, management’s response was unacceptable, and so was the complete silence after they denied our refund.

We booked the balcony room, and breakfast delivered out there was a lovely touch. The hotel was spotless, and the staff were so welcoming and kind. It’s a peaceful spot amid the city center bustle, with most major historic sites an easy walk away and great, inexpensive local food close by. Highly recommend it.

I loved everything about this place, and yes, I’d recommend booking it! The location is incredible, right in the heart of Rome and a short walk from the Colosseum, close to so many important monuments. The tiny but beautiful building dates back to the 1500s, and stepping inside made me feel like I was back in ancient Rome. The rooms are spacious, nicely finished and well looked after, with every comfort. The staff are so friendly. I got to chat with a blonde woman whose name I can’t quite recall, maybe Linda? She was a real hostess, so kind. Breakfast was excellent, and the prices were low, perhaps too low for what the hotel offers. I’d raise them! There’s WhatsApp assistance around the clock for anything you need. And if you can’t sleep, Linda might even sing you a song to help you nod off! Fantastic staff, top-notch breakfast, great location, and surprisingly low prices. Linda, I love you!

This is not a 4-star hotel. The reception closing at 7 pm feels more like a bed and breakfast under European accommodation standards. When we arrived at 4 pm, the receptionist rushed through check-in because she was in a hurry to leave and close the desk. By the time we found unacceptable conditions in both rooms, the reception had already been closed for a while. There was no one to hear about, record or fix the problems. The next morning, as soon as the desk reopened, we went down to complain: neither room had hot water or heating, the toilet didn’t work, and the view was of rubbish bins and a spot where people gathered to smoke drugs. That was in the SUPERIOR room. The receptionist didn’t record our complaints or offer any help, even though that should have been her basic duty, so we decided to leave this horrible place. The hotel misrepresents the stay conditions and facilities, and used clients’ credit card details for payment without their consent or presence. This is a sheer scam, not worthy of four stars.
