The Westin Excelsior Rome Hotel

The spa was a big reason we chose the Westin Excelsior, but it was disappointing. The sauna could only be used separately, not as a couple. The steam bath allowed us in together, but it wasn't acceptable: there was hair from previous guests, hardly any steam, and visible mold elsewhere in the poorly maintained spa. Our suite also felt dated and looked like it hadn't been renovated in a long time. During our two-night weekend stay, the minibar and water weren't replenished, housekeeping came in without knocking, and there was no coffee machine, something we'd normally expect even at many 3 to 4 star hotels. For the price, the stay didn't meet expectations. We've had noticeably better service, room amenities, organization, and food at similar hotels. We didn't feel we got value for what we paid, and based on this experience we wouldn't return.

We've stayed at the West Excelsior more than 15 times on our visits to Rome, and the staff keep making us feel welcome and appreciated, including for our Marriott loyalty. Their service is refined and professional, with a warmth you rarely find these days. We love the greetings from the doorman, reception's welcome, the concierge's help, and the attention to detail from housekeeping and room service, along with the cocktail lounge and bar service. The spacious rooms are well appointed and always immaculately clean. Marble bathrooms have been beautifully modernized, with strong-pressure showers, plenty of towels, and quality amenities. The spa and indoor pool are welcome extras. The dining room is comfortable, with lovely outdoor seating on historic Via Veneto. Breakfast is abundant, beautifully presented, and has choices for everyone's diet. It's an elegant Belle Epoque building with old-world charm. We love returning to incredible Rome, and our stay at the Westin Excelsior is part of what brings us back.

Pierpaolo greeted and checked us in so warmly, and we appreciated the attention to detail and service right through to our reluctant trip back to the airport. The location was just right, close enough to see the must-sees, but far enough away to enjoy the city's quieter beauty. What a great property, five stars all the way.

We've stayed here twice, and it's one of my favorite hotels in the world. The newly remodeled rooftop restaurant is a must, and we love the breakfast buffet. The staff and service are excellent, the hotel feels special, and the location puts everything close by.
