Tirreno Hotel

The treatment we got from the older man working there was appalling. When my husband asked to use the toilet by the check-in area after we’d checked out, he was told no. It made me feel they didn’t like people of colour, and that showed in the way we were treated. At check-in, we were told very angrily that we couldn’t come in until 2pm. We waited in the lobby for two hours, then watched someone else check in at 1:50pm without any trouble. When we went to the counter, the man shouted, “How can I help you!!!” After we said we were waiting to check in, he told us to sit down until he called us. We waited another 15 minutes, went back when he still hadn’t come, and he laughed that he’d forgotten us. He was extremely rude. The room wasn’t clean either: the floor hadn’t been swept, and there were hairs inside the bedsheet and on the bathroom floor. The bathroom was very outdated. Between its condition and the staff’s behaviour, I don’t know which was worse. This was the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in. I wish I could have got a refund and gone somewhere else. Hotel Tierreno isn’t worth the money.

We mainly picked this hotel for the location. Reception was open 24 hours, and the staff were helpful and friendly. My room was the cheapest, but perfectly okay apart from the shower cubicle, which was the narrowest I’ve ever seen. I’m a big girl and barely had room to soap myself. Breakfast was simple but fine: toast, eggs, salami, cheese, cornflakes, croissants, coffee, tea, milk, and yoghurt. You could hear plates and cutlery being handled in the kitchen. Sarah, the first hostess, was much more considerate and careful, while Julia could be heard a bit too much.

The location was very good, and it was easy to get around by bus and train. My room had air conditioning, which helped a lot in the summer heat. I stayed three nights in a standard single room, though a couple of things bothered me: the toilet would only flush once an hour, for some reason, and at night there was a repetitive machine-like sound that kept starting and stopping. Breakfast wasn’t interesting and the choices were limited. I can’t give it more than three out of five.

The location was brilliant. I could walk to the trains and to most of the city’s main tourist spots. It’s not a luxurious hotel, and the room wasn’t spacious. The building could use renovation, but that does keep the price fairly reasonable. There are some interesting rules, though they’re manageable. There’s a lift, but depending on your room you may still have to take stairs afterward. I didn’t get a chance to see the small garden. The bed was basic, and the large bathroom needs better taps. Breakfast was not bad, and the service came with a smile. I had a great stay. Star ratings mean different things in my country.
