I’d go early, around opening at 7:30 a.m., while the market is quieter. Locals come then for food they’ll cook during the day, but later in the morning it gets more touristy and they tend to keep away. It’s a nice chance to see a more authentic side of Venice. You don’t have to buy anything. You can just look at the produce and take photos, though the stalls are popular. In the covered fish hall, the Mercato al Pesce al Minute, they sell fresh fish. The open-air part has fresh and dried fruit, fish, meat, vegetables, and spices. The colors and smells make it easy to find something for a snack, lunch, or a healthy dinner. The market is where locals shop, and it’s near the Rialto Bridge in San Polo, so you can visit both attractions together. There are also lots of restaurants, bars, and cafes nearby, especially around the bridge, and it’s worth trying one of the typical trattorias. The Mercati di Rialto is one of my favorite spots by the Grand Canal, especially if you want fresh fruit or are staying in an apartment and cooking for yourself.

The fresh seafood was the highlight. Some of it had just come from the ocean and was still moving, and the vegetables were strikingly colorful, fresh, and in excellent condition. It was a refreshing change from the tourist crowds to spend time in a place where Venetians shop for seafood and vegetables and take in the local atmosphere. I highly recommend a visit to this old market that’s still in use.

Get there before 10 a.m. if you can. Although the market is listed as open until 3 p.m., the fish stalls start packing up at 11. When large blueberries are in season, pick some up in the produce area, they make a great treat. There are three good places to eat nearby. On a corner between the fish and produce markets, there’s a fish restaurant where you should try the boiled octopus. At the other end of the fish market, a little bar serves amazing oysters and really good ciscetti. Right next to it is a great fried seafood restaurant.

Go early in the morning, since vendors start packing shortly after noon even though the market is officially open until 3 p.m. It’s well worth a visit alongside Venice’s usual sights. This is the city’s best-known market, where you can see local restaurateurs buying fresh fish, seafood, vegetables, fruit, and plenty more. For us, it’s an essential stop.

Come early, before the crowds arrive, to catch the market as it wakes up and take in the smells and atmosphere. Mercato Rialto has a feel you won’t find elsewhere in Venice, with fresh fish, fruit, and vegetables to choose from. Just keep in mind it’s closed Sundays and Mondays.
