Casa Fubis

Viareggio itself was really great, thankfully, and helped us overlook the room. Still, our stay could have been much more enjoyable with better accommodation. Casa Fubis is close to the beach, which was handy, but at almost €100 a night it felt far too expensive. Next time we'd rather rent a holiday flat with a kitchen and fridge. We stayed seven nights in September. The room was clean, but old and noisy, with windows that brought in almost no light. The bed wasn't comfortable, and the bathroom was cramped, with barely any room around the toilet or to shower. There was no refrigerator either. The air conditioning worked well, though its batteries were dead. Breakfast was the same sweet pastries and other baked goods every day, plus cornflakes that seemed as if they'd been sitting around for weeks and the occasional yogurt. The coffee was decent. A friendly Italian woman cleaned the room daily and also looked after breakfast. We had little real contact with anyone managing the place. On arrival, we got a short, standard WhatsApp message with no proper directions or details about who to ask if we had questions. When we left, nobody was there except the cleaner. So we couldn't pay the tourist tax in cash as advertised, and we hadn't been told where or how to settle the room balance. After we asked, the cleaner contacted the owner, who explained by phone that she'd send a link. We eventually sorted it out, but it was a hassle.

The price was steep, and I expected a lot more. Although the room had its own bathroom, it was outside the room, like a typical Italian room rental. There was nobody around, and it didn't feel like anyone was properly overseeing a real B&B.

Location was the one good thing about our two-night stay. The rooms were small, dated, and dirty, and the bathrooms were no better. There was dust everywhere, no TV, and the sheets were so crumpled they didn't even look clean. The beds were uncomfortable, and you couldn't ask for a key to the entrance door. Avoid it.
