Hotel Aomori

We really liked our room and its sea view. Breakfast was amazing, and the service was wonderful. Parking is available, though it costs extra.

The hotel felt like a step up from the budget hotels and guesthouses I’d relied on for most of my cycle tour, and the staff were friendly. I spent two nights here in June 2025, at the end of my ride from Cape Sata in Kyushu. I’m hoping to continue from Aomori to Cape Soya in Hokkaido in 2026, and plan to book a night or two at Hotel Aomori to start that trip. Recommended!

The room felt a little dated, but its Japanese style had a very local feel. It’s a big hotel, and everything was quite decent. All in all, things were great.

The lobby looked excellent, the staff were very helpful, and the bathroom was clean. The room itself was dusty enough to set off allergies for me, my wife, and my brother and his wife in the next room. There was dust on the desk and coffee table, too. It looked like it belonged in a 1960s movie, complete with a wooden radio console between the beds. We switched on the ionizer the second night and the air improved, but it stopped after a while, with a red “water” light on. I’d expect that to be covered in room maintenance. The mattress was thin and very soft, like it had been kept well past replacement time. Dinner was nearly 6,000 yen per person for a buffet that was barely okay. Lots of things were missing, and restocking took a long time. They did give us a glass of wine on the house, which was nice, but dining here was disappointing compared with other hotels on our Japan trip. It was Sunday evening and few restaurants in town were open, otherwise we’d have gone elsewhere. Breakfast was included, though I wasn’t paying for the stay so I can’t say whether it was expensive. There wasn’t much variety, and items were missing again. On our second day, dessert was just sliced apples and pineapples. The neighborhood around the hotel looked rough, almost like a slum. Everything seemed to need fixing. Aomori Peace Park, about 500 meters south, was the only nice spot nearby, though it too looked like it had seen better days. The beach to the north is closed port property, and along the river to the east there’s no proper boardwalk, just neglected streets. A very humdrum, ugly area.
