Dinner was okay, but the toilet on the fourth floor was terrible. I won't stay on 4F again.
The dinner is seafood-heavy, so I'm not sure children would be keen on it, but the food is delicious and the quality and portions are spot on. I stay here when I'm out gathering jade. Wi-Fi is one thing this place really needs, and I found the shower pressure a bit weak too.
The rice was delicious at both meals, but most of the rest of our stay was a letdown. Dinner had plenty of dishes, though the pickles were so salty that I wondered if they were made with a lump of salt. Breakfast felt a little skimpy, and the scrambled eggs were overly salty. Fried fish in the morning was heavy, and I would have preferred grilled fish. We chose this old inn for its reasonable price, the ryokan name, the dinner photos, and the ocean view from the bath. But the place itself was in rough shape, not just our room. The entrance stayed open, as did unscreened hallway windows, so insects got inside. Beetles were all over the bathroom and hall. In our room, there were huge mosquitoes and crickets on the walls. The bathroom shower was broken and had weak pressure. The space was small, and the water was only lukewarm. We saw Kanto license plates on the other guests' cars and assumed they'd come from far away, since we didn't see local cars. The inn seemed family-run, and I wondered if they were short-staffed.
The rooms and bathrooms are pretty worn, so anyone who cares a lot about that may not enjoy the stay. The building and facilities could use some investment. Still, the staff were all kind and helpful, and there's a fun contrast between the beach-hut feel and being served a full course meal. I came while looking for jade, and the location right by the beach was fantastic. At night, I went down to the shore and saw a sky full of stars. The crab furu course was amazing, especially the really delicious crab sashimi.
We stayed on July 29th and pretty much had the place to ourselves. After collecting jadeite and swimming, we got back with wet clothes, but the staff let us head straight to our room and the bath. Everyone was kind and polite. The facility has a nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere that felt relaxing. The meal probably varies with the season. They couldn't get sweet shrimp, so they added more kinds of sashimi instead. When the rice cooker ran empty, they brought out more. People are always talking about rice being expensive or old, but this rice was white. Thank you for the meal. The raw oysters were the biggest I've ever had, and absolutely delicious. I'll come back next time I'm stone collecting.
